AT&T planning shake-up of SMS plans next week

Diposkan oleh Breaking News on Thursday, August 18, 2011

The carrier confirmed to CNET this morning that, for new customers, it will ditch its 1,000-message plan, which went for $10 per month, in favor of unlimited-only options. Unlimited messaging for individuals will be available for $20 per month starting on August 21, while a family messaging plan for $30-per-month will also be offered.

"The vast majority of our customers prefer unlimited plans," an AT&T spokesman told CNET in a phone conversation today. "And with text messaging growing, the number of people interested in these plans will keep growing."
Users who don't want to get into a plan can opt to pay 20 cents per SMS, or 30 cents per message when sending pictures or video.

Current customers who subscribe to AT&T's 1,000-message plan will continue to pay $10 per month for the option. AT&T's spokesman confirmed that current customers with the 1,000-messages plan can keep it, even if they enter into a new two-year agreement and buy a new handset.

Engadget was first to report the news.

AT&T's new messaging plans come even as customers' reliance upon SMS might soon wane. At its Worldwide Developers Conference in June, Apple announced that iOS 5 will come with a new messaging platform, called iMessage. With that, users of iOS-based devices will be able to send free text messages to each other over both Wi-Fi and 3G. The service also supports photos, videos, locations, and contacts.

That could be troublesome for AT&T, since the company activates millions of iPhones every quarter. Although text messages to non iOS-based devices will still be charged, if customers start to opt for iMessage over traditional text messaging, the carrier might see SMS usage decline.

Earlier this year, analysts at UBS estimated that text messaging volume growth was down to 21 percent in the first quarter for AT&T. UBS said that the company's growth in the prior year was 41 percent.

However, in a note to CNET today, AT&T offered up exact figures on its text-messaging growth. A company spokesman said that messaging volume increased by 25.6 percent in the first quarter. Second-quarter growth hit 24 percent, the company said.

Declines in text-messaging can be a drag on a carrier's business, UBS said earlier this year. The analyst reported that the average carrier makes an 80-cent profit on every dollar it generates in text-messaging revenue.

iPhone 5 now rumored to launch October 7

Diposkan oleh Breaking News on Wednesday, August 17, 2011

The iPhone 5 could go on sale on Friday, October 7, with preorders to start on September 30, according to the latest rumors in the ongoing saga of the hotly anticipated next edition of Apple's smartphone.

Citing intel from its own sources, 9To5Mac said yesterday that Apple had been eyeing either October 7 or October 14 as potential iPhone 5 launch dates. But with preproduction apparently running smoothly, the site says, Apple has opted for the earlier date.

Apple will reportedly offer the phone for preorder a week before it hits store shelves, looking at either September 29 or 30, though 9To5Mac's sources pin the 30th as the most likely date. Assuming the preorder date is accurate, at least for now, that also means Apple would have to hold its iPhone 5 unveiling sometime in September. Apple typically shows off new iPhones and iPads at high-visibility media gatherings some days or weeks ahead of the devices going on sale.

The October 7 date has also been floated by TiPb. However, the tech news site suggests taking the reports with a grain of salt since even if the date is on the money at this point, Apple's plans are fluid. Even 9To5Mac admits that "the date could and likely will change again."

But October itself has been strongly suggested as the launch month for the iPhone 5 by All Things D's Kara Swisher, pointing to information from her own sources.

TiPb isn't quite sure the new phone will be an iPhone 5. The site said it keeps hearing that the device will be an iPhone 4S with some improvements but the same design as the existing phone, a rumor that's been around for awhile.

Other reports say that Apple will launch two phones--the new and improved iPhone 5 and a more budget-friendly iPhone 4S, one that may even tap into the company's iCloud service to provide cloud-based storage. TiPb says that the debut of two new phones from Apple could explain the conflicting rumors that it's heard.

And yet other reports have put a potential iPhone launch date as early as September 7.

Adding further tidbits to the iPhone 5 saga, Macpost has published images purporting to be of replacement parts for the new phone. Replacement parts such as a camera lens and an audio jack have recently popped up online among different Chinese resellers, according to the site, and show some subtle differences from parts for the iPhone 4.

Finally, global carrier Telefonica will reportedly start cutting back on its stock of the iPhone 4 through September 12. Revealing the news, Engadget cited a source who said that such a move "will of course prepare us for the launch of a new smartphone." The source didn't offer up a specific date when the new phone will debut, though Engadget said it's heard that the launch will occur in October.

Windows 8 pre-release launching in coming months

Diposkan oleh Breaking News on Tuesday, August 16, 2011

Windows 8 is set to hit the pre-release stage over the coming months, according to a blog posted yesterday by Microsoft president Steven Sinofsky.

Though the term pre-release version is a bit vague, Sinofsky is likely referring to the beta of Windows 8 since he said that the company wants to "begin an open dialog with those of you who will be trying out the pre-release version over the coming months."

Aiming the new blog series "Building Windows 8," at customers, developers, and users in general, Sinofsky used the post to provide tidbits of information but not much detail yet as he acknowledged that "people express frustration over how little we've communicated so far about Windows 8."

Among other comments, Sinofsky said that "Windows 8 reimagines Windows," however he stressed that the company is committed to supporting Windows 8 on all existing Windows 7 PCs and hardware.

Though the initial blog "Welcome to Building Windows 8," was short on specifics, Sinofsky promised to reveal more over the next few weeks.
"There is so much packed into Windows 8 and there are so many unique and important lenses through which to view Windows 8, and so we want to be sure to take the time to cover as many of these topics as possible, to build up a shared understanding of why we've taken Windows where we have," he wrote. "So in the next weeks we will just start talking specifics of features, since there is no obvious place to start given the varying perspectives. From fundamentals, to user interface, to hardware support, and more, if something is important to you, we promise we'll get to it in some form or another."

The B8 blog, as Sinofsky referred to it, will be updated on a regular basis as different people from Microsoft share the latest information on the development of the new OS.

"As a team we're all going to participate--many of us will author posts, and all of us will read and take note of your comments on this blog," Sinofsky wrote. "We'll participate in a constructive dialog with you. We'll also make mistakes and admit it when we do. It is almost certain that something will hit a nerve, with the team or with the community, or both, in the blog posts or in the product, or both."

The new blog series comes at a time when rumors have been flying the past several months over when Windows 8 might debut.

In May, CEO Steve Ballmer said that the new OS would reach consumers in 2012, though Microsoft quickly shot down his comments. In June, Vice President Dan'l Lewin dropped hints that Windows 8 would launch during the fall of 2012.

A report in June by ZDNet reporter Mary Jo Foley cited a source claiming that Microsoft would release the Windows 8 beta in the middle of September at its Build developers conference. Though that specific date doesn't quite jibe with Sinofsky's "coming months" timeframe, Foley's source also indicated that Microsoft would release only one beta, followed by the traditional Release Candidate and the final RTM (release to manufacturing) version a few months later.

Sinofsky demoed Windows 8 at the All Things Digital D9 conference in late June. The next major event, he blogged, will be September's Build conference where Microsoft will offer developers more details about the tools they'll need to design for Windows 8.

Apple applies for patent to keep screens fingerprint-less

Diposkan oleh Breaking News on Monday, August 15, 2011

If messy fingerprints have you wiping your iPhone, iPod, or iPad screen on your shirtsleeve or pant leg several times a day, well, Apple has an app(lication) for that--a patent application, to be precise.

(Credit: Screen Shot by CNET's Boonsri Dickinson)

The trick is not to ask customers to wash their hands before touching the screen. But rather, it involves coating the screens of electronic devices with an oil-resistant material called oleophobic, according to a patent application that recently surfaced.

The liquid coating is applied using a method called Physical Vapor Desposition ("PVD"). The technique is used to deposit thin films of vaporized material onto the surface. In this case, the coating is applied in liquid form inside of a bottle that is pressurized with inert gas, so that it can be sprayed onto the surface.

(Credit: Screenshot by CNET"s blogger Boonsri Dickinson)

Rumors has it, the fingerprint-less surface might be a feature on the new iPhone 5. But the surface coating isn't entirely novel. The latest patent application describes an improved process and a more efficient one. Apple has already put the oil-resistant material onto surfaces of the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, or an iPad. Unfortunately, CNET previously reported that the coating begins to wear off after awhile.

Next Mars Rover Passes Key Tests on Road to Launch

Diposkan oleh Breaking News on Saturday, August 13, 2011

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla.--NASA's $2.4 billion Mars Science Laboratory has completed an exhaustive series of functional tests to verify the car-size rover's readiness for launch in November on an eight-and-a-half-month voyage to the Red Planet and a dramatic rocket-powered "sky crane" descent to the surface, officials said today.

Engineers now plan to carefully fold up the rover's robot arm, camera mast, wheels, and suspension so it can be packed inside a protective aeroshell that, in turn, will be attached to the bottom of a rocket-powered descent stage. The entire spacecraft then will be attached to its interplanetary cruise stage, encapsulated in a nose cone fairing in late October and hauled out to launch complex 41 at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station for attachment to a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket.

Liftoff is targeted for 10:21 a.m. ET on November 25.
"We just wrapped up our last functional test of the vehicle," said Dave Gruel, who is assembly, test, and launch operations manager for the project. "Our functional test campaign included things like showing the vehicle can successfully go and do our entry, descent, and landing phase, get down to the surface and actually deploy the arm, deploy the mast, take images, things of that nature."

Starting tomorrow, he said, "we're going to start stowing the vehicle for launch."

"It's pretty overwhelming," Gruel said. "We all got to see the Juno launch just a couple days ago and realizing we are next up...is a pretty humbling experience for the team...We're all really confident we've exercised [the rover] to the best of our ability and what's next up for Curiosity is getting down to the surface of Mars and showing us what she's capable of doing."
NASA gave journalists a final chance to view the MSL flight hardware today before the rover is packed up for launch.

The Mars Science Laboratory rover, dubbed Curiosity in a student-naming contest, is the most sophisticated unmanned spacecraft ever built to rove about the surface of another planet.

Unlike past Mars missions, the Curiosity rover will not set down atop a legged lander or bounce to the surface encased in protective airbags. Instead, it will be lowered to the ground and set on its wheels by a slowly descending rocket-powered "sky crane" designed to unreel the lander like a lure on a fishing line.

At an altitude of about 65 feet, a gravity-fed harness system will lower the MSL rover away from the sky crane, which will continue its descent until the rover's wheels touch down. Sensing the change in its load, the computer will send commands to release the harness and cables; the sky crane, its job complete, will fly off to a crash landing a safe distance away.

The rover, meanwhile, will be ready to begin two Earth years of exploration to look for carbon compounds and evidence of past or present habitability. The rover also will study the chemistry and composition of rocks and soil in the landing zone, assess weather patterns, measure the radiation environment, and determine the long-term distribution of water and carbon dioxide.

Samsung Nexus S Review

Diposkan oleh Agus Ariefandy Syuhada on Thursday, August 4, 2011

Following in the footsteps of last year's Galaxy S, the Nexus S presses a 4-inch AMOLED display into a glossy, black plastic body, but where a number of people thought the Galaxy looked cheaply made, we'd challenge anyone to say the same about the Nexus. This newer design feels solid and looks sleek thanks in part to the phone's curved display. You probably heard some of the marketing buzz about this "unique" if subtle feature, and while this is not a ground-breaking leap forward for phones, we do like the way the screen looks and feels.

On the back of the Nexus is a seriously enormous-looking camera lens, covering an 5-megapixel sensor, and a much smaller external speaker vent. Samsung has positioned the headphones socket on the base of the handset, rather than the top; a point of difference we didn't fully comprehend until we played a game in landscape mode with headphones and discovered for the first time that the headphone jack didn't obstruct our finger positions.

One interesting design tidbit you'll notice when using the Nexus S is that Samsung has reversed the layout of the navigation keys on the touch panel below the screen, placing the Home button on the right and the Back on the far left. At first we found this difficult to get our heads around, but after using the phone for a while it began to make sense, especially when web browsing. Having the Back button on the left does make it much easier to access, and though your usage may differ, we tend to use the Back button far more than we use the Home key.

Samsung Nexus S User experience

If you're looking for an Android handset complete with dozens of widgets and wallpapers to customise the look and feel of your phone, the Nexus S is not the best phone for you. Google has backed the Nexus S as its developer handset, meaning it will be the first handset in Australia to run Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). It will be the first to get new Android updates, but also requires Samsung to keep the software exactly as Google designed. There's no Samsung TouchWiz user interface here, and though many will consider this a blessing, there is a sense that the Nexus S feels a little naked. This might underwhelm new Android users who are looking for the most attractive phone, but veteran Androiders will know where to look on the Market for downloads to spruce up their new handset.

The stock Android experience runs like a dream on the Nexus S, as you might expect from a Google-endorsed handset. Swiping through the five available home screens is smooth and almost entirely without any animation jitters, and transitions between screens, like the home screen and the applications drawer, are silky smooth as well.

Samsung Nexus S Multimedia and the web

The multimedia experience of Android smartphones has slowly been improving over recent releases; however, the Nexus S makes it obvious this is not the work of Google, with the out of the box multimedia experience being as simple as the available home screen customisations. You'd be hard pressed to find a Samsung handset in the last 12 months or more that didn't support DivX and XviD video playback and DLNA media sharing with other home electronics, but these important features are notably absent from this handset. The Nexus S supports MP4 video, as well as AAC and MP3 audio, and while some other sites are claiming it will read DivX files, it didn't work with any of our test files.

More disappointing, though, is the phone's sometimes laggy web browsing experience. For many people, web browsing is the core of a new smartphone, which is more important than call quality or any messaging feature. The Nexus S performed well under our page load speed tests, which is on par with the fastest Androids we've seen, but interacting with a loaded page can sometimes be a trying experience. Swiping to scroll down a page can be met by a second or two of lag, followed by extreme animation jitter. Even when the browser is working well it still feels like you're dragging the content of a website through molasses with your finger.

Identifying the issue behind this lag is difficult, especially given that the Nexus S looks fine on paper. It supports HSPA connectivity with 7.2Mbps maximum downlink and 5.76Mbps uplink, as well as connecting to Wi-Fi networks using wireless 802.11b/g/n protocols. It also features a Wi-Fi hotspot setting, allowing you to connect up to five different devices to share your phone's 3G connection over Wi-Fi. Some Nexus S users in the US speculate that the browser hasn't been optimised for use with Samsung's Hummingbird processor, a problem we really would have thought Google might have considered before partnering with Samsung on this project.

Samsung Nexus S Camera

Far more successful for Samsung is its 5-megapixel camera. Cameras in phones were an element we saw wane in quality through 2010, and it's nice to open the new year with such a great shooter. The camera in the Nexus S is fast, its focus is sharp enough and colour reproduction is excellent. As you can see below, the Nexus S holds up well compared with Apple's iPhone 4. Its colours do have a slight blue hue to them, but the detail in the plush toy's fur is great as is its replication on the shadows in the crevasses of the fur.

Samsung Nexus S Performance

As we mentioned above, the Nexus S runs on a Samsung Hummingbird chipset comprised of a 1GHz ARM processor and a PowerVR SGX540 dedicated graphics chip. The result is a smartphone that burns through most any thing we could throw at it, particularly our benchmark tests. Everyday apps open in a heartbeat, multitasking works as it should and the selection of Android games we tested during our review ran smoothly.

Now Gmail voice expanding to 38 new languages

Breaking News -- Now Gmail voice expanding to 38 new languagesCNETNews -- Now Gmail Voice expanding to 38 new languages, Gmail's phone call feature has kicked in a slew of cheaper rates to more than 150 countries.

An alternative to Skype, Google's calling feature enables you to make free domestic and inexpensive international calls to any mobile phone or landline via Gmail Chat.

Launched almost a year ago, the feature racked up more than 1 million calls its first day and has continued to expand, most recently offering the ability to make multiple calls at the same time.

Now, Gmail calling has expanded again in a move designed to save its users some money.

The company began rolling out the feature yesterday in 38 new languages for those who use Gmail outside the United States. As part of the global push, people making international calls will now be able to buy phone credits in U.S. dollars, euros, British pounds, and Canadian dollars, and will only pay for the time they talk.
Even further, Google is trimming its calling rates to a host of countries around the world.

As examples cited in a Google blog yesterday, people will now have to shell out only 10 cents a minute to call mobile phones in the U.K., France, or Germany (calls to landlines will still be 2 cents a minute); 15 cents a minute to call mobile phones in Mexico; and 2 cents a minute to call any number in China or India. As one comparison, calls to India previously cost 6 cents a minute.

Calls to the U.S. or Canada from the countries cited above will be free for the rest of the year. Calls to the U.S. or Canada from outside those countries will cost 1 cent per minute.

The new languages and rates are launching over the next few days, so some countries may not yet have it. To confirm if it's available in your country, Google says you should see a small green phone icon appear at the top of your chat list when you open your Gmail account.

Mysterious UFO spotted on sea floor

Diposkan oleh Agus Ariefandy Syuhada

Paging Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, we need you at the Baltic Sea as soon as possible. In what sounds like an opening for the next X-Files movie, an ocean salvage exploration company found an object on the floor of the Baltic Sea that looks an awful lot like a UFO.

The sonar images are vague at best, but the object still bears an uncanny resemblance to the outline of the Millennium Falcon. Has George Lucas been spotted anywhere in the vicinity?

The images come courtesy of the Ocean Explorer team, an experienced group of Swedish salvagers that already raised an impressive collection of rare and very expensive champagne from the watery depths.

Expedition leader Peter Lindberg notes that the mystery object is 60 meters across. Lines in the ocean floor next to it almost look like a skidded landing area.

Chances are that the discovery has a much less titillating explanation than coming from another planet. It could be a sunken vessel or a flooded archeological site.

There will be no answers until the team goes in for a closer look.

Originally, Ocean Explorer wasn't planning to check into the object any further due to the the expense of underwater exploration. With so much excitement and donations coming in, the team is planning to revisit the area.

In the meantime, UFO fans can let their heart rates rise and entertain sweet dreams about visitations from beyond our solar system.

iPhone 5 could double Apple's market share

Diposkan oleh Agus Ariefandy Syuhada on Tuesday, August 2, 2011

Breaking News -- iPhone 5 could double Apple's market shareCNET News -- With pent-up demand for the iPhone 5, the new phone could double Apple's market share, according to an investor's report released yesterday by Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster.

Surveying a sampling of 216 mobile phone users, Munster found huge demand for the iPhone 5 among both current iPhone users and those who own other smartphones.

Looking at all those surveyed, 29 percent currently own iPhones and 17 percent have an Android phone, leaving 28 percent with a BlackBerry and the rest with other types of phones.

Among existing iPhone owners, 94 percent of those surveyed expect to buy another iPhone, leaving only 6 percent eyeing an Android device. But among current Android smartphone users, 42 percent said they're likely to switch to the iPhone.

Among Verizon subscribers in general who don't presently own an iPhone, 55 percent expect to buy one, with 74 percent specifically waiting for the iPhone 5.

That number compares with 53 percent of AT&T customers specifically awaiting the next model iPhone.

Of all the respondents, 64 percent plan to pick up an iPhone when it's time to buy a new phone. Further, 60 percent are waiting for the iPhone 5 as opposed to allowing their contract to expire or their current phone to break down.

Though the survey targeted only a small number of mobile phone users, it does highlight the strong pent-up demand for the next iPhone. Such demand is due in large part to the longer wait time (14 months assuming the iPhone 5 debuts in September versus the usual 12-month cycle), according to Munster.

In light of the demand, Munster believes the iPhone 5 may push Verizon's numbers even higher than the 3.8 million iPhones that Piper Jaffray is estimating the carrier will sell in the September quarter. And the overall iPhone unit estimate of 22 million for the quarter may also "prove to be conservative."

Breaking News -- Diablo 3 Beta Release Date Coming SoonTechGadgetsWeb -- Blizzard Entertainment released a beta update for Diablo 3 this weekend, suggesting that the final release date of the full fledged system is nearing. The last Diablo game was released on the year 2000, building up a huge user base till date.

This makes the current update the most anticipated game title of the year. Blizzard Entertainment has a different focus on World of Warcraft but the game play on Diablo makes it unique and addictive. The company earlier gave an official statement regarding the target dates for the release, hinting it to be on the third quarter, between July and September. Now that the Beta version is released, its expected that the Official Release will happen some time soon, mostly to be around the fourth quarter. Reports also suggest its most likely to be released on January 2012.

However reports in reliable websites suggested that, a localized version for Brazil will come out in a month. Of course, the company made a press release saying that they are not willing to compromise on quality for hitting the release timeline.
Diablo 3 is all about customization. There are no skill points or talent trees, which is a considerable turnaround in the update. More about the game play will be updated soon!

Outfitting Porsches for Arabian kings

Diposkan oleh Agus Ariefandy Syuhada on Sunday, July 31, 2011

Breaking News -- Outfitting Porsches for Arabian kings -- CNET --STUTTGART, Germany-- Are you an Arabian king wanting to get a new Porsche in your country's national colors for each of your ministers? No problem. An American rancher wanting your cattle brand, instead of the Porsche logo or the model name, embossed on your seats? Check. A black hood and spoiler on an otherwise all red 911 GT? Porsche can do it.

Indeed, Porsche Exclusive can do just about anything its customers want--so long as it's safe, and legal. Though unusual colors for interior stitching is easy, and odd combinations of interior and exterior colors might present a problem only for people with aversions to, say, all brown Porsches, the company does occasionally have to say no to things like modifications to aerodynamic packages that would unbalance the car, or to steering wheel covers that would make the air bag inoperable.

As part of Road Trip 2011, I got a chance to visit the Porsche Exclusive workshop and showroom in Stuttgart, home to the company's headquarters, as well as its museum and one of its manufacturing plants, and I came away with a much keener eye for how Porsche owners choose to outfit their cars.

There are simple modifications--say, choosing to have only "Turbo" emblazoned on the rear of the car instead of the full model name, or choosing a different color for the interior trim. And then there are the ostrich-leather requests. But for 25 years, the company has been looking for ways to say yes to its customers, and if my visit revealed anything, it's that there is a never-ending supply of customers looking to spend just a little more to have their Porsche stand out from the crowd.

Actually, nearly every Porsche has some sort of customization done, but less than 30 percent of owners choose the most unusual options, the ones that are picked just 3 percent to 5 percent of the time. And while many Porsche buyers never venture beyond their closest dealer, anyone can make the trip to Stuttgart and visit the company's flagship Exclusive showroom, where they can look at more than a dozen example cars, some of which are decked out in colors that no driver should ever choose--but that they could if they wanted to.

FCB Watch the iPhone application

Breaking News -- FCB Watch the iPhone application -- FCBARCELONA -- FC Barcelona are launching FCB Watch, a new iPhone application that lets fans know, via mobile phone, when the next Barça matches are, and the bars where they can watch the broadcast. FCB Watch is a new iPhone application that FC Barcelona is launching that will allow all fans to know, by phone, where they can watch forthcoming Barça matches, and the bars which will broadcast the game. FCB Watch works as a social network for Barça fans through which fans communicate where they are watching the game or where they will watch it. In this way, other fans looking for somewhere to watch the game can find out where it’s on.

This mobile application is free to download and to do it to the iPhone all you have to do is access iTunes and download it. Please note that the application will shortly be available for Android.

How it works?

Once downloaded, users of the application who want to find a place to watch the game will select the match with FCB Watch through the "Search" option, indicate their destination, and straight away the phone will provide all the places where one can watch the game. Those who wish may confirm, via the button 'Confirm Event', that in a certain bar you can watch the game. Once a bar has confirmed that they’ll be showing the match, one can confirm that they will be there with "I'm attending" or that they are already doing a "Check in".

If a user wants to make a request that a bar might show the game, he can use the "Request" option. In this way we can let the owner of the bar know that customers want to watch the matches. The option "Favourites" will allow the user to identify their favourite bars and the user can receive bar promotions and the games the bar is planning to broadcast.

According to Didac Lee, director in charge of New Technologies, "the application will serve to bring fans to the team wherever they are, anywhere in the world" This initiative, a pioneer in the world of football, responds to Barça’s new digital strategy to serve all members and supporters. At the same time, such actions also represent a new source of income for FC Barcelona in the field of technology and, specifically, the mobile platforms.

Video Gamer’s Chris Staniforth's death blamed on DVT

Diposkan oleh Agus Ariefandy Syuhada on Saturday, July 30, 2011

Breaking News -- Video Gamer’s Chris Staniforth's death blamed on DVT -- BBC -- Chris Staniforth, 20, who would play his console for up to 12 hours, died in May from deep vein thrombosis (DVT). A man whose son died after playing video games for long periods is campaigning for greater awareness of the risk posed by their excessive use. His father David believes the condition may have been triggered by long gaming sessions.

DVT can form during long periods of immobility and can kill if the clots travel to the lungs.

Computer records showed his son would sometimes play online on his Xbox for periods up to 12 hours.

The coroner said a clot formed in Chris' left calf before moving to his lungs.

Once there, it caused a fatal blockage, known as a pulmonary embolism.

Mr Staniforth said: "After my research I saw there was no difference to Chris sitting at a desk on his Xbox and someone on a long-haul flight.

"Sitting still is literally the danger zone. Chris loved to play and would stay up all night.

"Millions of people worldwide are playing these games for hours, and there is a risk."

While Mr Staniforth has no problem with games consoles, he wants to highlight the heightened risk of DVT associated with being immobile, and is in the process of setting up a website.

Microsoft, who manufacture the Xbox console, could not be reached for comment.

Apple wins global smartphone crown

Diposkan oleh Agus Ariefandy Syuhada

Breaking News -- Apple wins global smartphone crown – (CNET) -- Apple, followed closely by Samsung Electronics, overtook Nokia in global smartphone market share during the second quarter.

Apple controlled nearly a fifth of the smartphone market, or a share of 18.5 percent, as it shipped more than 20 million iPhones, according to market research firm Strategy Analytics. Samsung Electronics wasn't far behind, with 17.5 percent of the market share and 19.2 million smartphones shipped. Nokia fell to third, with its market share plunging by more than half to 15.2 percent from 38.1 percent a year ago.

The ever-shifting top of the smartphone food chain is illustrative of the ultra-competitive nature of the business. Over the past year, Nokia has seen its market share drop as consumers opted for more sophisticated operating systems made by Apple and Google. The declines have forced Nokia to partner with Microsoft and switch to its Windows Phone operating system.

Apple's success continues to hinge on the smash hit iPhone. The company's momentum is expected to only keep building, with the next version expected to come out in September.

Another ingredient for its success: healthy expansion into international markets, with Strategy Analytics pointing to China and the rest of Asia as particular sources of strength.

Samsung, meanwhile, has enjoyed broad adoption of its Galaxy S smartphone franchise. Rather than position it as a "hero phone" at a single carrier, the company has opted to sell the device to as many carriers as possible, making its rapid ascension possible.

Samsung earlier reported a decline in its second-quarter profit, but said smartphone sales continued to grow. Yesterday, the company said it had sold 5 million units of the Galaxy S II in the first 85 days it was on store shelves. Samsung's rapid improvement have some wondering when it may overtake Apple for the smartphone business.

Overall, the global smartphone market grew by 76 percent to 110 million units shipped.

Separately, IDC reported that Apple more than doubled its market share for all mobile phones to 5.6 percent in the second quarter, signaling the largest jump for any of the handset vendors. Based on total handsets, Apple remained in fourth place. Nokia remained the top handset maker despite its market share falling to 24.2 percent from 33.8 percent a year ago, as its strength in low-end handsets in emerging markets has kept its pole position secure.

Samsung, which also has a large business selling basic handsets to markets around the world, had the second-largest market share. Its share slipped slightly as more people moved away from those basic handsets.

Apple Companies rethink app strategies

Apple Companies rethink app strategies - (WIRED) -- We all knew that once Apple starting enforcing new rules for in-app purchases, it would change how media companies do business on the iPhone and iPad.

Now, we're beginning to see just what that looks like for companies trying to avoid giving a 30% cut to Cupertino. Amazon, Kobo and Barnes & Noble all removed the stores from their iOS applications on Monday, as well as any hyperlinks to or mentions of their online stores.

Google Books -- recently announced distribution and retail partner for the new multiplatform Harry Potter e-books -- is simply gone from the App Store, without explanation from either Apple or Google, although possibly a revised app may be forthcoming.

Users of these newly-storeless apps can still download and read all content purchased elsewhere. But the apps are no longer an easy direct or indirect portal for sales, to the chagrin of their developers and some of their customers.

The absence of this portal will hurt some retailers more than others. For readers accustomed to buying content via the web, not much will change. But it reduces the overall functionality of the apps -- booksellers would love to have an easy way to sell new products to customers immediately, based on what they're reading or searching for right then -- and new or less-sophisticated users might find the need to make an end-around via the web browser confusing.

It's an extra bit of friction in an otherwise mostly friction-free experience. And any additional friction for other booksellers clearly strengthens the position of Apple's own iBooks.
