On April 12, 1861 Confederate artillery began shooting at Fort Sumter, located in Charleston Harbor, beginning the U. S. Civil War. At 4:30 a.m., Fort Johnson shot a mortar at Fort Sumter from James Island. On Morris Island and Sullivan’s Island Confederate batteries began shooting at Fort Sumter. The reason was the United States had refused to give the fort to the rebels. The Confederates bombarded the fort for two and a half hours. Then, at 7 a.m. Fort Sumter began returning fire from about twenty guns. The shooting lasted all day and through the rainy night and into the next day. At 1:30 p.m. Fort Sumter’s flagpole was shot away. A little while later, the fort surrendered. The next day the American’s left the fort, which was taken over by the South Carolina militia, although the fort was in ruins. The U.S. lost the battle, but eventually won the war, after the slaughters which occurred at Shiloh, Antietam, and hundreds of other battles. After the war, slavery was outlawed throughout the entire United States, including in the South.
