Than Shwe, who has led Myanmar's military with an iron hand for nearly two decades, has retired after hand over power to civilian government.
Formerly known as Than Shwe Senior General. He was last week dismissed the junta government of Myanmar after the election last November undermined by the absence of democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi and there are claims of fraud and intimidation.
"Senior General Than Shwe and his deputy Maung Aye has been retired. They are now going to rest, "said Myanmar officials are not to be named as quoted by AFP on Monday (04/04/2011).
However, one of the other officials said that although the second-General is already retired, they still will give advice if the government requests it.
Military hierarchy has long held power in resource-rich countries in Southeast Asia. Although he has retired, many analysts believe Than Shwe will still have a significant role behind the scenes of government.
